“The Chosen One” sermon based on Luke 14:7-14 September 1, 2019 preached at York Pines United Church
(Paraphrase) When he noticed how the guests vied for th e places of honour, he told a story . “When you are invited by someone to a big banquet, do not choose the place of hono u r ; someone more distinguished than you may have been invited; the host who invited both of you may have to come and ask you to move’ and then in disgrace you would have to find a place of lesser honour . W hen you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place . When y our host comes around , he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be hono ured rightly in front of the other guests . A ll who exalt and elevate themselves will be humbled, and those who are humble about themselves will be honoured .” He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends , or brothers or family, or rich neighbo u rs, just so that they will invite you in return, and you w ill be re cognised .
